I have now lived long enough to see all my heroes become villains…
These are rough times for everyone. Even the “uber-rich” are having to cut back. Sadly, it is not because there is no money to spend, it is because the people we would assume want to help our great country are solely concerned on getting their piece of the action.
Maybe I am a cynic…
I realized a long time ago that the medical field was not interested in curing anyone, but out to maximize profits for its stakeholders. An example of medical greed in America can be found in Grapevine Texas. I took my better 75% to Grapevine for a quick checkup, and we decided to stop at the local Denny’s for breakfast. The medical facility is across town, but the complex is large enough that it can be seen from most anywhere one has a clear line of site. The complex reigns over a substantial plot of land, and is more than likely a major employer in the area. Given all these facts (yes, I am making some assumptions about the plot of land, and employment figures), what motivation is there to fully heal the injured, or cure the sick? If the medical field were truly interested in healing and curing, they would take the money they earn and put it into research, not bigger cars, houses, titles, and facilities. So, I have lived long enough to see doctors become villains.
One hero, education, I had held out hope for that they would be a bastion of common sense, not the greed seen everywhere else. I guess I was mistaken once again. I found this article on the Dallas Morning News today…
This young woman had done everything right to get into the college of her choice, but because of greed, she is now having to deny herself her dreams. Yes, I understand that it costs money to run any organization, but how can we expect to remain the most powerful country in the world when our young cannot afford the education that made us that way. Granted, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a community college. Often it is a fantastic way to get an education. Doesn’t it make sense however if we hope to remain competitive, that our great education facilities should set the example?
